The Scoop

S.A. Ukraina has a long history of successful volleyball teams and this remains true today.  While in the past there were men's and women's teams competing at various levels and age groups, we presently only have a competitive men's team.  Or perhaps I should say teams, as there are enough players to field 2 teams for many tournaments. The team consists of a few veterans and many new younger players.  This dynamic works well and the team has had a lot of recent success.

During the year you can find us practicing at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre on Christie St from 6:30pm - 9:00pm on Mondays and 7:00pm - 9:30pm on Wednesdays.

With the onset of summer we head to the beach at Ashbridges Bay for some 2 on 2 volleyball.  You will find us out there most Sundays and sometimes other nights. Look for us on the west side of the beach where volleyball is played.

Anyone in the Ukrainian community wanting to play should contact Roman Darewych at 416-268-1364 or on rdarewych@rogers.com.  Clearly we have a men's team, but it would be great to resurrect the women's team or get some youth teams going as well.

 

Breaking News - 2009-09-20

Oleh Kovalchuk who has played with us for the past 6 years and was playing at Ryerson University has made it to the prime time.  He recently went to Italy to play professionally.  Paid to play - wow!  Congrats Olehu, we are all very proud of you.  When I find out the details of which club and how we can track him, I will post that information.

Recent Results

Sept. 19, 2009 - H. Wagnera Memorial Tournament at Ryerson University - 1st place.

Sept. 13, 2009 - Polonia Cup Open - beach volleyball at Ashbridges bay.  SA Ukraina entered 3 teams and all made the semi-finals.  Roman Darewych & Myroslaw Chwaliuk - 2nd place, Oleh Minyaylo & Slavko Betlej - 3rd place.  And it was great to see Zenia Martynkiw out playing in the women's tournament with her partner Larua.

Aug 22, 2009 - Ukrainian Independence Day Tournament at Centennial Park. Grass 4's.  All 4 SA Ukraina teams made it to the semi-finals and then the rains came, so all four teams shared the prize.

July 18, 2009 - Hawkestone beach 2's - 10 players rotating partners - we had a blast.  Click here to see some video from this event.
